Culture Through Material and Ritual
Toronto, Canada
Spanish Pig is a specialty food store centred on Spanish cured meats, preserves, and culinary traditions. Developed within a 1,400-square-foot commercial shell, the project explores how a retail interior can communicate culture not through imitation, but through atmosphere, material, and the rituals surrounding food.
The design draws from the warmth and informality of Spanish markets, where conversation, display, preparation, and exchange exist closely together. Natural textures, layered surfaces, warm light, and carefully framed products create an environment that feels collected over time rather than conventionally manufactured. The result balances Mediterranean character with the clarity and functionality required of a contemporary retail space.
Food becomes the point of connection between memory and place. Products are not treated simply as merchandise, but as carriers of geography, craft, family tradition, and shared experience. The interior supports this relationship by encouraging people to slow down, look closely, ask questions, and encounter culture through the senses.
Spanish Pig reflects N··DO’s understanding of design as a form of translation—transforming identity and everyday ritual into spatial experience. More than a store, it is an intimate cultural environment where material, taste, and human exchange meet.
