I am learning crochet and working on a floor loom as ways of understanding how thread becomes structure.
The processes are different. Crochet grows through a continuous sequence of loops made by hand. On the loom, threads are held under tension while another thread moves across them, gradually creating a surface.
For now, I am practising both—observing repetition, tension, density and the relationship between individual threads. I am interested less in producing textiles than in understanding their construction: how separate lines connect, depend on one another, and eventually become something capable of holding together.
These processes are beginning to enter my larger exploration of material, shelter and belonging.
When do separate threads become a structure?
